American cellist to visit

Gayle Smith, an American performer and teacher of cello, has been appointed to the staff of the University of Canterbury School of Music for five months, starting in May. A student of Pablo Casals, Smith was a finalist in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970, and lived in London for 10 years while performing in Europe. Since 1981, she has taught at the University of Utah. As well as performing as a classical concert artist, she plays contemporary music and fusion jazz with the Jarman/ Kingston Quartet. While in Christchurch, Smith will teach cello students and chamber music, and make regular solo and chamber music appearances.
