Opening of Ice base hit by delay

NZPA-Reuter Lima Bad weather prevented Peru from opening its first base in Antarctica yesterday, the Defence Minister, Enrique Lopez Albujar, was quoted as saying from the Chilean port of Punta Arenas. Mr Albujar had originally been scheduled to open the Machu Picchu base, named after an ancient Inca city in the Peruvian Andes, on King George Island off the Antarctic coast, at the weekend.

But he said fog and strong winds had made it impossible for the Peruvians to fly to Antarctica from Punta Arenas, at the southern tip of South America.

“We are making every effort to reach Antarctica and open the base,” Mr Albujar was quoted as saying on Radio Programas in Lima.

Peru has long shown interest in setting up a permanent presence on the frozen continent.
