Alebua refuses to admit defeat

NZPA-AAP Port Moresby

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Ezekiel

Aiebua, yesterday refused to concede defeat in spite of the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Opposition People’s Alliance Party after completion of counting in the General Election in the Solomon Islands. Solomon Mamaloni’s P.A.P. won 11 seats and

was claiming the support

of seven independents and a Liberal Party member of Parliament. A P.A.P. spokesman said the party was looking to form a majority Government in the 38seat Parliament, Solomon Islands radio reported. Mr Aiebua told AAP yesterday he was still hopeful of forming a new

coalition Government, in spite of the loss of eight members of his 14-strong Ministry.

“With the numbers we have, it is impossible to form a Government alone,” he said in a telephone interview. “We would be looking for support from other parties. I still believe we can get the numbers.” There are still three weeks of lobbying before the Solomons Parliament meets on March 21 to elect a Prime Minister by secret ballot.

Mr Alebua’s United Party finished with only three sitting members.
