Iran lamb trade talks continue

PA Wellington Negotiations with Iran for this year’s lamb contract are continuing in spite of a delay in payment for lamb already supplied, the chairman of the Meat Marketing Corporation, Mr Bruce Bishop, said yesterday. Iran has been chronically late with payments in the past, and has recently paid half the millions owed for the second of three contracts for last year. The third contract was never signed because Iran was unhappy over the price asked by New Zealand.

Because of the delay, some of the meat in the second contract is still in store in New Zealand. Mr Bishop said it was normal commercial practice not to complete a new contract when money was owing for previous shipments. The corporation was in constant contact with the Iranians. “We have offers on the table and they have counter-bids on the table,” he said. No mutton was in the new contract at this stage, Mr Bishop said. Mutton was shipped to the Iranians for the first time under the 1988 contract.
