Record for Simcic

Anna Simcic, of Canterbury, broke the New Zealand women’s 200 metre backstroke swimming record at the Australian Championships in Melbourne on Saturday. Simcic recorded 2min 14.30 s when she finished second in the final. Her time was 1.5 s better than the old record held by Sharon Musson. Simcic, aged 17, was well inside the 1990 Commonwealth Games qualifying time of 2:19. Her record would have earned her sixth place in the final of the event at the Seoul Olympics, and was 0.58 s better than the gold medal winning time at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in 1986.
