Cup start closer for Vo Rogue
NZPA Melbourne The Queensland trainer, Vic Rail, has given his strongest hint yet that Vo Rogue would' tackle the sAustsol, ooo weight-for-age Australian Cup (2000 m at Flemington next month. Rail said he wanted to start the front-running champion, but was leaving the final decision to the owners.
“I would like to race him if it doesn’t rain, but it’s not up to me,” said Rail.
But Rail’s recommendation may be enough to erase any doubts the owners may have about starting the horse. The SUSIM International Tancred Stakes (2400 m at Rosehill on March 18 is being considered as an alternative or as an extra race for Vo Rogue.
In doubles charts Vo Rogue is rated an even money favourite for the Australian Cup on March 11, but with the likely
absence of Beau Zam and other top weight-for-age performers he could be as short as 1-6 or tighter. Vo Rogue was given an easy workout by Rail at Flemington on Thursday morning, but was eager to go faster. “He pulled hard, but went really well,” said Rail.
Vo Rogue seems to look fitter and stronger with every race and workout and returned without any sign of exertion.
At his last two starts Vo Rogue has won the weight-for-age C. F. Orr Stakes (1400 m at Sandown and the weight-for-age Blarney Stakes (1600 m at Flemington. He will be at long oddson to win his second St George Stakes, which will be his final lead-up to the Australian Cup.
The Lee Freedmantrained Super Impose is considered the danger while his other rivals are Dandy Andy, Ideal Centreman and Celtic Heir.
