True Roman tops list
NZPA-AAP Melbourne True Roman became Australia’s highest stakes winning trotter with his brilliant win in the V. L. Dullard Trotters’ Cup at t Moonee Valley on Satur-* day nght. The eight-year-old’s success in the sAust2o,ooo ($26,667) feature event took his stake earnings to $Au5t343,764 ($458,352) to overtake the winnings of former champion mare, Scotch Notch, a dual Inter-Dominion winner in the early 1980 s. Scotch Notch went on to win much more when her career took her to the United States. True Roman (8-I'l favourite) had 9m to spare
from Kano Joe (16-1), with Suave Guy (8-1) third a further 5m back. The gelding rated 2:03.9 for the 2840 m journey, just a tenth of a second outside the track record established by Game Ebony in December, 1986. However, True Roman demolished his own class record of 2:05.2, , which he set in winning the Dullard Trotters Cup last year. True Roman sealed the fate of the Dullard Cup early when he charged straight to the lead while his main danger, Glenfield Girl, went into a gallop as the mobile released the field. Glenfield Girl backed from 2-1 to 13-8, took
about 75m before settling back in gear by which time True Roman had reached the lead and reinsman Gavin Lang was dictating his own terms. Glenfield Girl’s trainerdriver, Dick Lee, surged the six-year-old around the field to sit outside True Roman for the last 2400 m but she was a spent force 600 m from home and weakened to finish fourth. True Roman reeled off his final 1600 m in 2:02.9, his final 800 m in 60.1 seconds and his final 400 m in 30.6. True Roman has now won seven of his 11 starts for this season and is clearly the best squaregaiter in Australia.
