University men win

University (men) and composite women’s team, Guess Who, were the respective winners of the open A grade divisions at the recent twelfth annual Rebels club tournament at Ashburton.

University, strengthened by the inclusion of Saint's (Wellington) league player, Tony Shallcrass (14 points), beat the host team, Rebels, 43-27 in a fast-flowing final of the men’s grade. It was the first time Rebels had made the final.

Mark Rainbird slotted 10 points for Rebels, with Brian Kerr working hard to pick up the match award. The team also included Howard Timms and Bob Scammell and it intends to amalgamate with a Christ-

church club to enter the division one competition. Earlier in the day, Rebels edged out the Running Devils (mostly Checkers players) 4039 and University defeated Rangiora A, 36-35, in two exciting semi-final clashes. Sue Bennie, playing in about her sixth successive women’s final, put together another composite team, this time called Guess Who. Spearheaded by Sue Garden, a former Palmerston North and Wellington League player, Guess Who edged out Minties B 28-24.

League team members Sue Bennett (11 points) and Rhonda Milner spearheaded Minties play.

Sue Garden was later awarded the most valuable player of the tournament

award. Minties B narrowly beat regular finalist, Aranui A, 2322 in one semi-final, while Guess Who easily accounted for checkers 24-15 in the other match.

The Hutt Valley Rebels club again featured in the men’s and women’s A grade finals with the results the reverse of last year’s.

Rebels won the men’s section, beating the youthful Aranui B side 34-28, while Halswell A upset the Rebels women 12-7, in a tight low scoring game to take the women's A final.

Aranui C edged out the Christchurch Deaf club 23-19 in the men’s final, while Hororata Gold beat a tired Halswell B 12-6 in the women’s B final.
