Munro breaks N.Z. medley record in Australian win

PA Sydney John Munro swam the race of his life to win the 400 m individual medley at the Australian swimming championships in Melbourne on Saturday evening, breaking the New Zealand record and the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard. Munro, aged 17, who is coached by Ross Anderson at North Shore, headed off Mark Ikin, of New South Wales, to win the final in 4min 30.875ec. It was more than three seconds better than his previous best time and well inside the New Zealand mark of 4:31.49 set by Brent Foster at an international meet in Canberra. Ikin led the race until the breaststroke leg, when Munro pulled alongside him and they turned together for the final 100 m of freestyle. They were neck and neck in lanes four and five until the last 30 metres when Munro edged ahead and then touched two tenths of a second before Ikin. Another N.S.W. swimmer, Brent Harding, was third, five seconds later. Richard Lockhart bettered the qualifying time set by the New Zealand selectors for the Commonwealth Games for the 100 m breaststroke in the final when he finished second in 1:5.08 to South Australian Phillip Rogers (1:4.60). Lockhart’s good form continued in the round of heats when he regained his New Zealand 50m breaststroke record with a time of 29.895ec. His clubmate at Mount Roskill, Michael Beverland, took the record from Lockhart when swimming at the Pacific schools games in Syd-

ney in December. Another highlight for the New Zealand contingent during Saturday evening’s finals was John Steel winning the consolation final of the 100 m butterfly in 57.56.
