Trial win by Great News
NZPA-AAP Melbourne The champion international 50-footer Great News won the opening race of the 1989 Australian Admiral’s Cup trials, sailed on Port Phillip Bay yesterday. Great News, owned jointly by David Forbes, of Sydney, and John Calvert-Jones, of Melbourne, and steered by Forbes, led the 11-boat fleet throughout the 29-nautical mile race, sailed in 34deg. temperatures and a variable 10-16 knot, hot northerly wind.
On corrected times, Great News, arguably the world’s fastest 50-footer, held off a determined challenge by the newly launched Melbourne one-tonner, Joint Venture, to win by 45 seconds. Joint Venture, owned and skippered by Ron Elliott, and steered by the America’s Cup skipper, Colin Beashel, came from fourth place midway through the fleet. Beashel, with his Australia II crew-mate, Grant Simmer, as his tactician, steadily improved the position of his state-of-the-art one-tonner in an impressive performance against Australia’s top oneton ners.
The Western Australian Farr 40, True Blue, skippered by Lawson Klopper, but steered by Gordon Lucas with the New Zealander, Chris Dickson, as tactician, sailed impressively early in the race.
She paced it with Joint Venture boat for boat over the first triangle, but as the breeze lightened, she lost ground. However, True Blue still finished fourth over ail and second-best of the onetonners.
Madeline’s Daughter and Gary Appleby’s Sagacious V were both recalled at the start with Sagacious V slow to return and losing a vital three minutes. From last halfway through the race, she recovered well to place sixth. Hitchhiker 111, owned by a Western Australian yachtsman, peter Briggs, had a luckless day after sailing well early.
