Travis Swamp

Sir,—l hope that everyone interested in the future of Christchurch’s townscape read the feature article in "The Press” (February 23) entitled “Corridors of native wildlife.” A workshop is to be held in Riccarton House on May 17, entitled “Urban Landscape 2020.” The proposed destruction of Travis Swamp has many counts against it, not the least being the cost to the ratepayer. However, protection and development of this area as a unique wildlife area would enhance the stature of Christchurch as a place to live or visit. Who today would doubt the value of our parks and reserves, which have all been under threat of development at times. Land left “wild” is not wasted if it is used by the native plants and animals. Pukekos are citizens of Christchurch too! — Yours, etc., HELEN CONSTABLE. February 23, 1989.
