Health funding

Sir, —Valerie Norton (February 20) suggests that women’s needs will be voiced and responded to if there is a balance in numbers between men and women on the Area Health Board. There is such a balance on the present Canterbury Hospital Board (seven women, seven men), but that in itself does not guarantee that women’s health needs are met. What is required first is that all members, women and men, should be sensitive to the health needs of women (and to the unmet needs of other groups). Second, those members must have the courage to make decisions instead of passing the buck.—Yours, etc., DAVID CLOSE, Member, Canterbury Hospital Board. February 21, 1989.
