N.Z. births exceed 57,000
PA Wellington Statistics show live births registered in New Zealand exceeded 57,000 in the year ended December, 1988 — the highest figure in 14 years. The Acting Government Statistician, Mr Ron Welply, said live births registered in the year ended December 1988 totalled 57,548, compared with 55,254 for the
1987 December year. This was an increase of 2294, or 4.2 per cent. About one-fifth of the increase was because of a rise in the number of nuptial births, from 39,456 to 39,924. The number of ex-nup-tial births (births occurring out of wedlock) increased from 15,798 in the December year, 1987, to 17,624 in the December year, 1988.
Deaths registered in the year ended December 1988 totalled 27,408 — only 11 fewer or 0.04 per cent less than the 27,419 deaths registered in the December year; 1987. Because the number of live births significantly increased, while the number of deaths dropped, there was a marked upturn in the natural increase in the population, from 27,835 in ' 1987 to 30,140 in 1988.
