Playschool misses out

PA London The top New Zealandbred steeplechaser, Playschool, has lost his fight to compete in next month’s blue riband of steeplechasing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The 10-year old suffered a leg injury oh his seasonal debut last November and efforts to get him fit in time for Cheltenham have failed. Mrs Jennifer Barons, the wife of the trainer, David Barons, said yesterday Playschool had almost fully recovered from his injury but it had been decided not to risk run :

ning him in the race. “We have decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and let him have the rest of the season off,” she said. But Playschool will be back next season and Mrs Barons said she saw no reason why the horse could not repeat his success of last year when he won three main races in a row. Barons still has two New Zealand runners entered for the Cheltenham meeting — Auction Law and Seagram, both winners this season.
