Drought
Sir, —The drought may have broken in the region in which V. Langdon (February 13) resides. On Saturday we experienced yet another nor’wester followed on Sunday by a dry southerly. The garden contains many wilted plants. The paddocks are still dry and the irrigation is still going. Dr Cherry may well be quite correct with his “dismal supposition” that the drought will not break until at least April. Whether or not he is largesalaried is beside the point. He has made a prediction, presumably based on records and research and it remains to be seen whether or not. he is correct. If it rains In substantial amounts from now on, the drought will be broken. Meanwhile hope and encouragement are useless unless they contain some elements of reality. It is a ridiculous waste of time and energy planning a budget with the hope of getting $3O for a lamb and having a $lO,OOO power bill. The reality will probably be a $16,000 power bill and a $25 lamb. If what we hope proves to be the reality then the extra income and reduced expenditure will provide all the encouragement we need.—Yours, etc.,
S. R. LOVETT. February 13, 1989.
