By Royal command
NZPA-PA London The “Neighbours” of Ramsay Street flew halfway round the world to answer a personal Royal command, they told a London news conference yesterday. The Queen Mother invited the stars of the popular Australian soap opera to appear before her at today’s Royal Variety Show.
“The invitation came from Buck House,” said lan Smith, who plays Harold in the television series
watched by 16 million Britons — including the Queen Mother and Princess Diana.
The “Neighbours” cast will perform a comedy sketch.
However, they will be without the show’s biggest crowd-puller, Kylie Minogue, who left the series several months ago but who still appears in British episodes.
She is now concentrating' on her pop music career and will appear separately during the charity show. Minogue
will introduce the “Neighbours” sketch.
The show organisers are under orders not to exceed three hours after complaints from Buckingham Palace that last year’s performance overran by more than 60 minutes.
The hold-up meant the Royal party did not get away from the show until midnight, after meeting the stars. Concern has been expressed about keeping the Queen Mother, aged 88, out too late.
