Wage round a ‘crunch time’
The current wage round was “crunch time,” not only for the dairy industry but for New Zealand’s economy, said Federated Farmers, dairy chairman, Mr Geoff Mathis, last evening. He said that screwing the dairy industry with unrealistic wage claims at a time when inflation was running at 3 per cent could be suicidal for the industry’s work-force. The Dairy Workers, Union had asked for a 15 per cent pay. rise. The last two years had been the most difficult since the Depression for dairy farmers.
Many had taken on increased debt which would have to be cut back before production could be increased. In the last two years the dairy farmers had still recognised their responsibility to dairy factory workers. Dairy farmers would not be blackmailed into accepting wage claims beyond reason. They could compete and improve their market share only with the cooperation of the unions, The Dairy Workers’ Union could not' be reached for comment last evening.
