Aust, lower in dull trading

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed lower in very dull trading as traders marked time ahead of Wednesday’s release of the August balance of payments data. “The whole market is noncommittal,” one broker said. The gold sector held up well considering the downward pressure, he added. “Some market players are beginning to realise that some of the gold companies are somewhat insulated against the falling gold price," he said. The all ordinaries index had fallen 7.6 points to 1543.5 by the close of floor trading. The gold marker slipped 9.1 points to 1590.7, the all industrials index 9.2 to 2561.4 and the all resources 6.2 to 781.4. Coles Myer also eased 5c to 1035, Adsteam 4 to 730, Bond Corp 2 to 208 and Elders IXL 1 to 343. News Corp was steady at 1000 c, as was FAI at 435. Those industrials to gain included Arnotts, up 8c at 530, Pacific Dunlop, up 6 at 444, and Fletcher Challenge, which has sought Commerce Commission approval to acquire 100 per cent of BNZ, up 3 at 380.
