Geographer wins award
Professor Jane Soons, of the University of Canterbury, has become the first woman to receive the Livingstone Medal for scientific achievement in the field of geography in the Southern Hemisphere. She is also the first winner to reside in the Southern Hemisphere. The award, given by the American Geograpical Society, was presented at the International Geographical Congress held recently in Sydney. It comprises a large bronze medal, a citation and a lifelong subscription to the journal, Geographical Review. The citation said Professor Soons had achieved
world renown for her research on glaciers and glaciated landscapes within the context of New Zealand quaternary history. “She also has the unique distinction of being the first woman appointed to a professorship at any New Zealand university — a mark of the respect that she has achieved among her academic and research colleagues in all parts of the world,”
Professor Soons has been a long-term officer and leader of the International Union for Quaternary Research, holding the offices of vice-presi-dent, president and pastprudent.
