Top mares will provide Orari highlight

By

DAVID McCARTHY

While the annexation of the Geraldine Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today by stablemates, Camallino Star and Joy tripper may not be quite as straight forward as it seems at first glance, the reappearance of the pair in the Cloverlea and Licensing Trust Handicaps, respectively, will be a highlight of the programme.

Camallino Star is attempting something she has not managed before in a thus far distinguished career by winning first-up over 1200 m. There is no doubting the Oenjay Star mare is capable of a bold run fresh for she was only just beaten at this meeting last year by Headman in that condition. That was a C 3, 1400 m event and the shorter distance today could test the sprinting powers of a mare at her best at 1400 m and beyond. Twelve months ago Camallino Star followed her Orari effort with a win over Eye Full in the Breeders’ Stakes, a

limited handicap, and she is on target for that race again this year before trying something more testing from a stamina point of view later in the spring.

Last season the Australian-bred mare went on to win the Churchill Stakes, the Levin Stakes, in track record time of 1.21.67 for 1400 m, and the Timaru Cup. Her main opposition today comes from sharp, short-course sprinters down in the weights which should relish this sort of, race. Wanda Girl and Biko have, at this stage, no pretensions to Camallino Star’s class but they could more than test her

over a swift 1200 m on a firm track around the Orari bends. Godsin is another which must be considered. Decree Nisi could need another run while Benedire, along with other members of the Whittington team from Hastings, has dropped out after travelling badly. Joytripper looks the better prospect of the two Jackson-trained mares under the conditions of her race, the Licensing Trust Handicap. The Daryl’s Joy mare was versatile last season winning a maiden at 1200 m

and the Waitaki Ladies Mile at Oamaru, beating Ultra Sound among others at 1600 m. She also ran third to Spyglass and Impasada at the same distance in the Breeders’ Ladies Mile at Ellerslie Joytripper has had a trial to fit her for this and should be too good for her rivals. They are a moderate enough lot with the Ashburton winner, Glukus, having a style suited to this course. Blue Willow could appeal for lengthy odds having raced well here before. He looked bright at the Ashburton trials last week.

beat Camallino Star here last year at 1400 m. Will improve with it but can be bold fresh. 5 2115 Godsin 7 R.
