M.O.T. bribery alleged
PA Wellington Three Auckland Ministry of Transport staff have been suspended amid allegations of bribery and malpractice connected with issuing lifetime licences, a police officer has confirmed. An investigation was being held centred on the Ministry’s Mount Roskill office, said Chief Superintendent Jim Morgan. “We know a number of people are involved. Money allegedly changed hands, but how much money was involved is unclear,” he said. Inquiries were believed to have started about two weeks ago after a member of the public gave a tip to the police. Some of the Ministry’s civilian staff were alleged to have received bribes to process false applications for the new lifetime licences, issue new lifetime licences to people using false names, or commit other “serious irregularities.” A Ministry source told the "Sunday News” three Auckland Ministry staff had been suspended on full pay.
