Marlborough in fightback

PA Blenheim Marlborough staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in its 100-year history when it came from 26-3 behind to beat Wairarapa-Bush 30-26 in a national second division rugby match at Blenheim on Saturday. The match had plenty of significance, marking the home team’s centenary and with both teams tied at the top of the divisional points table.

Conditions were ideal for the clash, but there was little for the home team to cheer about in the first half. WairarapaBush took full control and with tries to the halfback, Peter Ryan, the wing,

Michael Foster, and the fullback, Craig Pepperill, stormed away to a 22-3 halftime lead. Early in the second half the Wairarapa-Bush wing, Paul Kennedy, raced from 30m out to increase ,the advantage to 26-3. It was then that Marlborough launched its fightback, clinching its victory during a 20min spell. The first five, lan Stark, who finished the match with 22 points, got things going with a penalty. Then the second five, Ken Boyd, touched down and Stark added the extra points to complete the first of Marlborough’s three converted tries.
