Crossing bells -fail
Several vehicles crossed the Sawyers Arms Road level-crossing when a train was approaching yesterday morning after the warning bells failed. One man said that the warning lights were working, but he did not realise that until he had crossed. He saw several other drivers do the same. Although he was in no immediate danger — the northbound train was still 300 to 400 metres away — the man had “a bit of a fright.” The crossing has bells and lights, but no barriers. The Railways signals department had at least two complaints. A repair team, found and fixed the fault yesterday afternoon. Such failures were rare, a spokesman said.
