Japan Week planned Christchurch will go Japanese in the first week of October with a wide range of activities planned for Japan Week. The Japanese influence will be felt by shoppers in city malls where demonstrations of martial arts, calligraphy, bonsai and ikebana will be held. The Canterbury Museum will display Japanese swords, armour and contemporary pottery in the Oriental Arts Gallery. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery and the Canterbury Public Library will also mount Japanese displays. Other Japan Week activities include kitemaking and flying at Queen Elizabeth II Park, and Cathedral Square lunchtime activities. Chocolate heist A thief with a sweet tooth broke a window at the Rowley Avenue Dairy and grabbed 16 cakes of kingsize chocolate. The window was broken about 5 a.m. yesterday, and police are checking on a Holden station waggon seen in the area at that time. Coolstore fire Firemen used breathing apparatus to fight a fire at Christchurch Coolstores, Watts Road, yesterday. The fire started in a wax vat about 8 a.m., causing fumes and thick smoke. It caused only minor damage to the factory. Lurking suspicious A man has been seen acting suspiciously near St Albans Park and Edward Avenue. The man, aged in his 60s, has been seen loitering in the area while children have been playing in the park. Road toll 539 The Ministry of Transport said yesterday that 539 road deaths had been reported so far this year, compared with 560 at the corresponding time last year. There had been 35 deaths so far this month, compared with 34 at the corresponding time in September last year.—PA. Wellington Harbour An incorrect caption appeared under a picture of boats and ships on page 20 of “The Press” yesterday. The correct caption should have been: “Wellington Harbour,” an item in the Angus Grey exhibition at the Canterbury Gallery until tomorrow.
