Outdoor recreation week-end planned

Tramping, canoeing, rock-climbing and caving will be some of the activities available at an outdoor recreation week-end planned for next month. More than 30 instructors from local tramping, canoeing, caving, orienteering, rock-climbing and other outdoor clubs will take part in the week-end, to be held at the Craigieburn Forest Park on October 15 to 16. Called “Time Outside,” the week-end will offer a new and easy way to try challenging activities under supervision, say the

organisers. “The week-end is for everyone,” said Mrs Heather Blowers, of the Outdoor Recreation Information Centre. “Families can go together, or individuals, or groups of friends, and everyone aged over 14 can go in different directions on different activities. “You can go abseiling, canoeing, rock-climbing and caving all in one week-end. Or you can tramp, experiment with wildlife photography, orienteer, and learn how

to survive in the bush,” she said. Equipment would be provided, but participants would need to bring warm clothes, running shoes and wet-weather gear, she said. v Each person attending can choose four of the activities on offer, each activity taking half a day. The week-end is being organised by the Canterbury Mountain Safety Committee and the Outdoor Recreation Information Centre.
