Stylish grey filly in work

A grey Beaufort Sea filly getting through her tasks in fine style is one of the more prominent of a large group of two-year-olds under the direction of Garth Jackson at Riccarton. The filly, from Ingres, is the second foal of her dam, the first being Tigres Knight. Ingres is a sister to Super Dude and by Super Gray, one of the best-bred stallions ever imported to New Zealand, but one which proved blood is not everything. He was by the great Njinsky from a sister to the great galloper, Secretariat, and half-sister to Sir Tristram’s grand-sire, Sir Gaylord. Super Grey left some good horses but his biggest contribution could yet be through the breeding of his daughters. The Beaufort Sea filly is

closely bred to the speed influence, Nasrullah, (grand-sire of Beaufort Sea) and early speed can be expected, from her. Jackson has a Crested Wave filly and an Alibai gelding purchased from a recent sale while a colt in training is by Terreno from Princess Thalia, the Shifnal mare which was the best two-year-old filly of 1972-73, her wins including the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes. Terreno is a Vaguely Noble grey and a Group One winner up to 2400 m in France. His eldest crop are three-year-olds and he left the winner, Rural Prince, when lightly represented last season. He inherits the grey from his maternal grand-sire, Abernant, a speed horse while his dam, Ileana, won a race. Jackson bought a

Beechraft youngster at the Karaka Sale named Midnight Tan and has a So Vain filly from Sind, a Sobig mare which left one of Super Gray’s two major cup winners in Rastes which resumed boldly in a sprint at Blenheim last Friday. A Domingly colt from Missymoe is also in work. Missymoe was a useful performer for Graham Sanders in the mid 1970 s by Bottle Top while Domingly, line-bred to Star Kingdom, won up to 1600 m in Australia and is a son of a two-year-old stakes winner there.

An Open Day halfbrother to Dancer’s Rythym is another colt in the string. Open Day’s stock are starting to show up lately i©--
