Inky Lord looks sharp

Inky Lord looked in grand order for the $10,200 Liquorland Sires’ Stakes Heat at the Ashburton meeting a week tomorrow when he outfinished Emcee to win the main heat at the Ashburton trials yesterday. “He’s got as much speed as the open class horses,” enthused reinsman, Ricky May, after the nuggety Lordship colt unwound a dashing home straight sprint to win going away by half a length. Last season’s Sapling Stakes winner paced the 2400 m yesterday in 3:8.9, being timed over his last 800 m in 58, however his closing 400 m would have been the quickest section. Inky Lord is one of 22 entries for the Sires’ Stakes, with his toughest opponents likely to be Highview Boy, Unique Blue Chip, Star Kingdom, Agile, Happy Hazel and last week’s Addington winner, Franco Adios. Emcee, which resumes in the $20,000 Tegel Poultry Flying Stakes next week, swept up on the home turn and was only run down in the last 50m. From 50m behind, Emcee was timed over the 2400 m, post-to-post, in 3:2.1, with his closing 800 m in 58.2, without being extended. Mystic Bromac fought on from the third line for third, with Silence next, just shading Precious Wave, now being trained by Cryil Hay. Inky Lord’s stablemate, Application, which resmes in a flying mile at the Ashburton meeting next week,' was untroubled to run his closing 800 m in 59.2 to win the Cl and faster mobile pace by three lengths. The robust entire, which led throughout, took 3:11.7 for the full 2400 m. Tyron Scottie, which ran third to Nooky Bear at the Methven workouts last Sunday, was not blowing after running second, from 70m behind, in the Cl and faster trot.
