Swimmers in two dead-heat races
NZPA-Reuter Seoul An Italian, Manuela Carosi and an Australian, Karen Lord, deadheated twice before a third race decided which of them should swim in the Olympic 100 metres backstroke consolation final today. First, they tied for sixteenth place, each clocking one minute 04.69 seconds in separate heats, and then they dead-heated in 1:05.05 in a head-to-head swim-
off for the last spot in the evening’s B final. A second swim-off was called and at the 50-metre turn they were still inseparable at 31.25, continuing stroke for stroke up the second length. But Carosi edged ahead near the finish and touched in 1:04.62 to beat Lord by 0.13 of a second to break the deadlock. “Girls, thank you for three great races,” the announcer said.
