‘Behind Closed Doors’

By

KYRA JAMES,

aged 10, of Carew

It was a week before my birthday and I couldn’t wait. But when I got home from school that day Mum said we were shifting to Miami on my birthday. I was really wild and ran to my room. Later Dad came up and said it wouldn’t be that bad, but all I could think about was the Miami College. I knew I would go there because I heard my mother and father talking the day before. I didn’t understand it then but now I did and I hated the thought of the drugs and the smokes the pupils have in their spare time. The next day . I went to my friend’s place in Miami. While I was there my friend and I went to see the house that I would be shifting into. It was a tall red house and was a creepy old place. We pushed on one of the doors and it opened. We

walked in. It was quite dark and for a few moments we couldn’t see.

Slowly our eyes became accustomed to the darkness. It wasn’t much and was rather empty but in the middle of the room there were two doors leading down under the house. My friend and I tried to open them but we couldn’t. We looked around the house and then went back to the main room. Karen and I tried again to open the doors then all of a sudden they sprang open.

We both fell backwards on to the floor. Slowly we got up and looked through the doors. There in front of us was a long stairway. We decided to walk down it; we were a bit scared but then it started to get. hotter. All of a sudden we were so hot and for a moment I started to walk back up the steps but then Karen grabbed my arm to stop me. I looked back and I saw a great big monster-like thing.

It had horns and was

holding a pitchfork. Then I remembered what it was. It was the Devil. We turned and ran but the door we had come through slammed shut as we ran to it and tried to open it. It wouldn’t budge. The Devil kept coming up the steps. He grabbed me and my friend by our arms and took us down to where it was really hot. There he tied us to a pole. We knew if we didn’t do something fast we would be killed.

Philippa, my older sister, always used to tie me to a chair, so I wouldn’t be able to get away but I always seemed to wriggle free. But now it was a life or death matter and luckily my hands slipped free from the ropes. I waited till the Devil began to fall asleep then slowly I edged my way towards Karen and untied the ropes around her hands. We ran up the steps and tried to open the door at the end. Suddenly, we heard a

noise behind us. I turned and saw the Devil roaring at us.

Then the doors opened. 11 climbed out but Karen didn’t get out in time. I turned just in time to see the Devil starting to screw Karen’s head off. I quickly grabbed a jug off one of the shelves and chucked it at the Devil. It hit him in the face and blood flew everywhere. In the midst of this I pulled Karen up and we ran outside. Just as we got outside the house burst into flames. We ran as fast as we could to the nearest phone box and rang the fire brigade. They came and put out the fire.

When I got home from my friend’s place Dad said he had had a good offer for a job and we would not be shifting. I was really happy and was also glad I wouldn’t be going to Miami College. I’ll never forget being' trapped behind those closed doors!
