Liqueurs to tempt jaded palates
New Zealand liqueurs are generally rather unexciting beverages. Ever since I can remember we have had the same boring old concoctions of cherry brandy, creme de menthe, and creme de cacao. The only, spark of innovation in all that time occurred when someone thought of a coffee liqueur. That one was so successful that everyone jumped on
the same band waggon and we had coffee liqueurs ad nauseam. There was obviously a hole in the market. It seems that, on the basis of the onlooker seeing most of the game, it took an Aussie to spot it and to exploit it.
Around Christmas an old gentleman from across the Tasman made his appearance and, instead of saving his flock from
the evils of alcohol, Father O’Leary embarked on a course of temptation! The Father O’Leary liqueurs are all cream-based and come in a range of flavours — velvet cream, Old English toffee, hazelnut and rum, strawberries and cream, raspberries and cream. An extensive sampling programme was embarked upon, sup-
ported by slogans such as “Father knows best” and “The temptation was too great,” it has been found that a great many people have been only too pleased to be tempted. This innovative approach has resulted in cream liqueurs, such as Baileys and Carolans, being made available at little more than half the usual price.
