Ratepayers’ money for dogs

Christchurch City ratepayers will contribute towards a campaign to encourage dog owners' to have their animals neutered or spayed. The council last evening voted $57,000 of rates money into the dog section of the health department’s budget for “incentives” for dog owners to prevent the increase in numbers of unwanted dogs. The $57,000 was approved

from rates earlier in the year to bridge the deficit expected in the running of the council’s dog shelter.

However, the shelter did not have a deficit at the end of the financial year and the council’s budget sub-committee axed the sum from the dog vote. Cr Charles Manning, dogs’ best friend on the council, argued last evening to have the allocation reinstated.

While his fellow councillors would not support putting rates into an account with a credit balance they did back his plea for the money for a neutering and spaying programme. The vote was close — as it was on all the budget amendments proposed last evening. On a voice vote councillors gave the money to the dogs.
