State of civil emergency lifted
The state of civil emergency in Greymouth — in place since 1 a.m. on Friday — was lifted at 5 p.m. yesterday. Making the announcement after a meeting of the Civil Defence executive yesterday afternoon, the Mayor of Greymouth, Dr Barry Dallas, said that some of the barriers would be maintained to assist un-
til cleaning operations were completed. After the emergency was declared, the Greymouth commercial area, north of the railway line, was closed to all but essential traffic working on restoration. Shopkeepers and others had to make personal application at Civil Defence headquarters to take vehicles into the area, and all
other motorists had to stay outside the barriers. Checkpoints were maintained at the barricade near the Cobden bridge on Mawhera Quay where permits issued to enter the commercial area were checked. Only a few pedestrians were in the main shopping area yesterday.
