By

JEFF SCOTT

Nugent Lopez turned in a useful trial for the Guthreys Tours Handicap for three-year-olds at Addington Raceway on Friday evening, when he streeted a maiden field by seven and a half lengths at the Rangiora trials yesterday.

The latest in a growing list of winners for the North Island-based Albatross stallion, Surmo Hanover, Nugent Lopez made a sweeping run from four places back on the outer to make the lead on the home turn in the penaltybearing Rangiora Trotting Club Pace.

Nugent Lopez cleared out to win untested for his West Melton trainer-reins-man, Peter Ryder. The 2600 m, run in pouring rain on an easy track, took 3:31.3 with the leaders running their last 800 m in 61.8 and 400 m in 31.8.

This was Nugent Lopez’s fourth career outing. He earlier impressed with a fast-finishing second to Laurene Dale in a pen-alty-bearing pace at Addington at the beginning of the month. Quickstep, in the open until the 1500 m, fought on

for second, two and a half lengths clear of Nautical News, which tracked Quickstep throughout. Charming George, which resumes in the first leg of the T.A.B. treble at the Canterbury Park meeting on Friday, scored a front-running win in the C2 and faster pace in

3:34.1, the last 800 m in 60.8. He was out by three lengths at the finish from the fast-finishing Twilight Time, which came from six places back on the inner, being timed over his last 800 in 59.6. Le Marais, a stablemate

of the winner which also races at Addington on Friday, ran on well late for third. Idle Pride, a candidate for the $12,000 Imperial Hotel N.Z. Two-Year-Old Trotting Stakes on Friday, overcame an early break to win the CO trot in

3:43.3. The half-brother, by Game Pride, to Idle Scott was doing his best work at the finish, being timed over his last 800 m in 62.2 and 400 m in 30.8 for trainer, Bevan Heron. False Tricks, a form runner for the third leg of Friday’s T.A.B. treble at Addington, proved too strong for Petite Glamour (now with original trainer Paul Black) and Lopez Lord in the Cl and faster mobile pace. After moving up in the open at the 1200 m, False Tricks ran his last 400 m in 30.2 to win by a length, the full 2600 m taking 3:30.5. Earl Evander, which contests the Lion Brown Trot at Addington, held out Going On and Captain Sergio by a head in the Cl and faster trot in 3:32.7, while Idle Mac, an emergency for the Guthreys Handicap, led throughout to win a CO pace in 3:34.2.

Other winners over 2600 m were: Murdo (CO mobile, 3:27.2), Pseudo Pride (CO pace, 3:38.4), Global House (CO pace, 3:33.3) and Dream Come True (Cl pace, 3:39). Coringa Cavalier led throughout to win the two-year-old pace over 2200 m in 3:14.4, the last 400 m in 31.1.
