Rescue ship to visit
H.M.A.S. Jervis Bay, the Australian training ship that rescued survivors from a sunken Korean fishing boat last weekend, is to call at Lyttelton this week-end. Jervis Bay will be accompanied by the Royal Australian Navy flagship, H.M.A.S. Stalwart, a destroyer tender.
Both vessels are on a training cruise around New Zealand, and are due at Lyttelton on Friday morning. The two ships will be open for public inspection on Sunday afternoon, and are due to sail on Monday morning.. H.M.A.S. Jervis Bay took a prominent role in the rescue of 12 Korean seamen from the Dong Chang 3 after the squid boat sank in the western approaches to Cook Strait last Sunday. Jervis Bay, formerly a roll on-roll off ferry, was purchased by the Royal Australian Navy in 1977 and converted to the naval training role. H.M.A.S. Stalwart acts as a repair and maintenance facility for destroyers,
