Israel
Sir, —In response to C. E. L. Field and H. G. Oram on Israel’s “might, power and beatings” policy, new revelations indicate that Israeli soldiers have deliberately attacked unarmed Palestinians on the flimsiest of pretexts. They have deliberately beaten their prisoners and broken their bones, as well as using dum-dum bullets to inflict maximum damage, according to Neil Kinnock. I agree that Arab States and factions are not lily white and that they engage in brutal and inexplicable violence amongst themselves. However, this does not excuse Israeli violence against people whose land they are illegally occupying. I agree with Israel’s right to exist and that Israel should be recognised by its Arab neighbours. This should include a return of Gaza and the West Bank to the Palestinians. — Yours, etc., LARRY ROSS, Secretary, N.Z. Nuclear-Free Peacemaking Association. February 21, 1988.
