Filipaina fails to win Balmain contract
NZPA Sydney The Former Kiwi stand-off, Olsen Filipaina, has failed in his bid to secure a contract with the Sydney rugby league club, Balmain. Filipaina, aged 30, left North Sydney last year and had been trialling with Balmain for the past three weeks. The club secretary, Keith Barnes, said that Filipaina had missed out because of new rules that put a limit on 36 players per club. “I’m sony there wasn’t a place for Olsen,” Barnes said. “But it’s the new system of having only 36 graded players. That’s the problem.” Filipaina scored a try when he played in the first half of his club’s upset 26-18 loss to New South Wales Country last week-end.
At the time, Barnes described his performance as
"pretty tidy.”" However, the club’s retention committee decided on Monday against signing him. The former Aucklander, a veteran of 28 tests, joined Balmain in 1981. He later played a season for Eastern Suburbs before signing for Norths.
