Some of the old-style soda siphons which Alexanders Cordials at Kaiapoi still fills. These siphons were in vogue before the introduction of gas “bombs” for siphons. The sturdy bottles were made for many local South Island firms, long since gone. The bottles come in strong wooden cases.

Mr John Macdonald, the managing director of Aqua Source Holdings, which now owns Alexanders, believes the factory is the last place in New Zealand to recharge the old siphons. Its biggest customer is St George’s Hospital, Christchurch, which supplies them to patients. “The patients love them,” says Mr Macdonald. His firm has several hundred of the bottles which it refills for customers. The bottles are now collectors’ pieces.
