Orientation festivals offer music feast

It is orientation time for students at the University of Canterbury and Lincoln College, which means that it is a great chance to catch both New Zealand and overseas acts.

The university orientation tickets cost $3O, but for the public there is one snag — the requirement of one student I.D. a couple. Tickets to Lincoln College’s “Little House of Horrors” festival, which is already underway, cost $25.

The list of acts at both festivals is comprehensive. Opening night for Canterbury University (tomorrow evening) includes three women’s bands, Cassandra’s Ears, Putty In Her Hands, and The Laundrettes.

Saturday’s bands are Ahika and Ardijah, and on Sunday, a Christchurch special of The Camelias, Bailter Space, and The Bats will hold court in the ballroom. Wax Tadpole and Bill Direen are also featured.

Monday is also special, with Genie and The Wild Children, Snapper, and Jean-Paul Sartre Experience at the ballroom, and En Can Ma and Mudflat House Rockers upstairs. The Warratahs, the Wellington country rock band who have just released their debut LP, will be joined by Dead

Famous People and The Prodigies on Tuesday. Orientation will take on a Polynesian flavour on Wednesday with I and I, Kaihana, and Aotearoa. The first overseas act, Frank Chickens, will be joined by the Rhubarb Collective and The Greens on March 3. Painters and Dockers will bring Aussie rock on March 4, with the Axle Grinders and Three Leaning Men. Orientation for Canterbury University will wind up on March 5 when the Churchills, Terminals, and Sneaky Feelings are on the bill. Sacred Sisters and Shona Laing will play in the upper common room.

Those not nocturnally inclined can find plenty of daytime activities. Among the musical shows are the Mulligans Irish band on Tuesday, Ritchie Venus and the Blue Beetles the following day, and The Spaghettis and Chris Moore next Thursday. The Spaghettis are also featured at Lincoln College’s Breakfast Show tomorrow evening, along with Luke Hurley and The Wheetbix Boys. Saturday evening’s toga party has The Bedouins and Big Elvis, which winds up the musical side to the college’s orientation activities.
