Climbers will join Everest expedition
PA Wellington Two New Zealanders, Robert Anderson and Sandy Wylie, left for China last week to join an international anniversary expedition to Mount Everest. They are in the 14member Everest 88 team which will celebrate Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing’s conquering of the mountain 35 years ago by attempting to climb its east face without bottled oxygen. The expedition will trek for l a week in Tibet to the foot of the mountain and
establish a base camp at 18,000 ft. It hopes to gain the Chinese Government’s approval to carry a reflecting prism to the top of Everest so that surveyors can take measurements for a satellite-assisted survey of the mountain. The anniversary expedition is supported by the United Nations, the American Geographical Society, the Explorers’ Club, the National Geographic Society and the Mount Everest Foundation.
