10 years jail
PA Napier The Napier man who sliced off the nose and upper lip of a Havelock North chiropractor was sentenced in the High Court at Napier to 10 years jail. Adrian Andre Whetu Deinhardt, aged 32, had committed an act of “truly horrifying proportions,” Mr Justice Quilliam said. Deinhardt had “deliberately and callously” tied up Mr Garry Stewart last April 8 and disfigured him, his Honour said. Deinhardt was also sentenced to five years jail for aggravated robbery, two years jail for burglary, and a year’s jail for supplying a pistol, a charge he admitted. The sentences will be served concurrently. Defence counsel, Mr Mike Bungay, said Deinhardt maintained he was not involved in the attack. There were two matters that could be taken into account in mitigation —
the prisoner had made a call to the police for an ambulance soon after the attack, and had spent 10 months in prison on remand. Deinhardt was found guilty by a jury when a four-day trial ended in the High Court at Wellington on February 11.
