Chch rubbish dumps reopen
It was business as usual at Christchurch’s three metropolitan refuse transfer stations yesterday afternoon after workers agreed to return to normal duties. The Canterbury secretary of the Labourers’ Union, Mr Dick Lowe, said that union members had met in the morning and decided to lift all industrial action. Award negotiations with the employers would resume at 9 a.m. today. “We are hopeful of getting a settlement, but I imagine it will be a long day,” said Mr Lowe. The stations had been closed since Saturday, when workers were suspended after refusing to collect dumping fees.
All three stations were very busy soon after reopening, as members of the public and commercial businesses dumped rubbish that had built up over the three days. Domestic rubbish collections throughout Christchurch will resume today. However, the Christchurch City Council will not collect the bags put out for collection on Monday and Tuesday. Residents are asked to hold on to these until next week.
