Pledge retracted
The Israeli tennis champion, Amos Mansdorf, said he would ignore an anti-apartheid agreement he signed and play in the forthcoming South African Open. Mansdorf said he and his Davis Cup team-mate, Shlomo Glickstein, signed the statement denouncing apartheid and pledging not to play in South Africa in order to gain visas to India for the Davis Cup quarter-finals — Tel Aviv.
