Bid to protect Queen’s Chain

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington A petition is being launched to protect or recapture the Queen’s Chain — the strip of land reserved for public use above the high-water mark along all coasts, lakes and navigable rivers.

The principle of reserving the Queen’s Chain was incorporated in Queen Victoria’s instructions to Governor Hobson in December, 1840.

The petitioners believe the right of people to free access and use of the Queen’s Chain at the water’s edge is fundamental to New Zealand law.

The Wellington-based Queen’s Chain Protection Group is seeking donations to promote the petition.

It is calling on the Government to support and uphold the integrity of the Queen’s Chain.

It also wants the authority of the Minister of Conservation upheld to grant dispensations only for such purposes as the defence of the realm, essential harbour works (for which no suitable land is available), or because of impracticality (for example, where the Queen’s Chain would be at the top of a cliff).
