Claims delay toheroa season

A decision on the possibility of an open season for toheroas on Oreti Beach has been delayed, according to the Ministry of Fisheries south regional manager, Mr Dick Brown. The Ministry has opted to delay any decision until the working party on Maori fishing rights has concluded its report, expected at the end of June, 1988. It recognises that many people in Southland will

be disappointed by the announcement. Mr Brown asked for patience and understanding. It might be a blessing also in that traditionally toheroas had been harvested in early spring, when their condition is said to be at its best. Population survey results obtained in last spring, indicated that there was little reason for not having a very limited open season at Oreti Beach within the next year.
