Tower again on agenda

KAY FORRESTER
When the Christchurch City Council meets on October 19 it will again discuss a notice of motion on the Victoria Square tower. This time it will be to reinstate the approval given to the Tourist Towers, Ltd, 167 metre tower in August but rescinded in September. The man behind the move is Cr Ron Wright, who believes councillors may be changing their minds about withdrawing their support of the specific tower proposal last month. He wants the tower proposal debated again by the council and will put a notice of motion to the council meeting. Cr Wright said yesterday he had spoken to some councillors about the proposal and the council’s decision last
month to send to a town planning hearing a proposed District Scheme for Victoria Square allowing a tower but without approving a specific proposal. “I believe the numbers are there now for approval for the tower and I’ll make sure there’s a notice of motion Calling for those items rescinded last month to be restored.” Cr Wright said he had legal advice that he could put such a notice of motion. The vote at last month’s meeting to withdraw the approval given the $2O million tower was close — 10 votes to nine. "I’ll be talking to councillors between now and the council meeting,” said Cr Wright "We, as a council, have to restore our credibility in the city.”
