Ansett orders jets for Queenstown use

By LES BLOXHAM, travel editor Ansett New Zealand’s new fleet of Boeing 737500 s will allow it to provide an exceptionally quiet jet service to noiseconscious areas like Queenstown. The high performance aircraft will also be able to use Queenstown’s existing facilities without the need to lengthen the runway. The series-500 has about the same passenger capacity as Air New Zealand’s Boeing 737-200 S, but they will be equipped with the advanced technology of the bigger 300 and

400 models. These improved features include high bypass ratio, large-diameter CFMS6-381 engines for fuel efficiency and low noise, an improved wing design, an advanced flight management system, and a greater use of weightsaving materials. Boeing has confirmed that the first of Ansett’s five new jets will be delivered in May, 1990. ? The aircraft are part of a SUSBSO million order for 27 jets by Ansett Transport Industries, the largest re-equipment programme in Australian commercial aviation history.
