Tuapeka Knight likely to lead rivals merry chase at Cambridge tonight

Special correspondent Auckland The established champions, Tuapeka Knight and Race Ruler, will clash with the budding stars in the T.A.B. double legs at the Te Awamutu Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Cambridge this evening. Last season’s outstanding two-year-old pacer, Tuapeka Knight, makes his three-year-old debut against the promising Vance Hanover colts, Tricky Rhythm and National Image, in the DB Draught Stakes. Race Ruler, last term’s New Zealand Derby and Great Northern Derby victor, will again strike his last-start conqueror Gypsy Vance, another by Vance Hanover, and Brunswick in the United Bloodstock Services Mobile Pace. Tuapeka Knight has not raced since his shock failure in the Benson and Hedges Two-Year-Old, Championship Stakes at Alexandra Park on June 20. The former brilliant two-year-old was trying for his tenth consecutive win in the $130,000 feature but he choked just after the start and was eventually pulled up by his driver, John Hay. Tuapeka Knight made his first public appearance at the Pukekohe workouts last Sunday and satisfied his new driver, Robert Cameron, and trainer, Brian O’Meara.

The compact Smooth Fella—Tuapeka Dream colt indicated he was near his best when he strode to the lead in the Cl-C3 mobile heat just after the start. He ran his last 800 metres in 59s and final 400 m in 29.3 s to easily account for four older rivals. Tuapeka Knight has also impressed his Ardmore trainer O’Meara in trackwork. He recently proved too strong in one workout for his C 8 stablemate, Captain Cavalla. O’Meara said yesterday that the $2 million colt had fully recovered from the stone bruise he incurred just over a month ago. . , Cameron, a noted front-running driver, should be able to secure the lead with Tuapeka Knight and lead his rivals a merry chase in the $16,000 event.
