Young Indian makes fifth try for big prize

Special correspondent Auckland Young Indian has travelled the 300 km . round trip to Ellerslie four times for around $60,000 In stakes, an amount he could well surpass tomorrow in his fifth try for a big prize at an Auckland Racing Club meeting. From Maungakaramea, (a little way south-west of Whangarei) Young Indian is one of a group of smart three-year-olds which will be competing for the $120,000 Winstone Guineas and he seems a good prospect to win. Young Indian had his very first race at Ellerslie, on March 4, and picked up $lOOO for second. A month later he won and added $3250 to his earnings. Soon afterwards he gathered a further $30,000 from his third start on the course and a second placing in the Radio Pacific Sires’ Produce Stakes. His fourth and latest Ellerslie appearance brought him the Laurent Champagne Stakes and his owner-trainer-breeder, Mr Norm Morgan, $25,000. That makes $59,250, a considerable sum but one that Young Indian could more than double if successful in the Guineas, which is worth $75,000 to the winner. Young Indian was put aside after the Champagne Stakes, made a promising reappearance in a barrier trial at Ruakaka early last month, and has since been third then second in two starts. First up he was alongside Western 1 Lea and just a length from Poetic Prince in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes and the next time he beat all except four-year-old Historian, in a 1600 m at Pukekohe on September 26. The three races were nicely spaced, allowing Young Indian to maintain steady improvement and the chance of being right at his best again for this one. The Northland colt has Western Lea to beat again and he faces, as well, first

encounters with Westminster, Mr Tiz, Open Terrain and, among several from the Central Districts, Festal (Woodville), Trouvere (Foxton), and Higgins (Marton). Mr Tiz could well provide Young Indian with most opposition and in fact prove a handful for the other horse. Promising enough in the little asked of last season, Mr Tiz has won his only two races this time in, second of them the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, not by much but very impressively all the same. Taking his gallops at Matamata as an indication he has trained on in great style. Westminster was expensive to the punters who made him such a warm favourite for the Guineas Trial last Saturday. But while unable to hold Pikeson he beat the others very clearly, by upward of three lengths. Even with 1600 m to run as against 1400 m last time, it would be a sharp turnaround in form if Westminster did not again prove too good for those he beat last week-end. And that takes into account Higgins (fifth) and Festal (sixth) being in such trouble with about 500 m to run. From a wide barrier position Westminster had to go hard in the run to the first turn, hopefully this time he will not need to be used up much and so early. Open Terrain will be interesting in his return to racing after an enforced let-up, he looked so good when winning first-up at Ellerslie on August 8. So will Weston Lea, his failure in Sydney last Saturday notwithstanding. Both Weston Lea and Westminster were impressive, easy winners at Te Aroha before their last starts with the footing fairly soft which Weston Lea might always prefer. Guess, even though his best form lately has been the other, left-handed

way around, Lady Tristana and Tommy’s Mate seem to have the best chances in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Mltchelson Stakes with Sir Gerald a main prospect for the second leg, the Wilsons Cement Sprint Jetbet: 2 Rae* 1 12.35 ZIP TRADING HANDICAP $10,000; two-year-old fillies; 880 m 1 1 Concerto 2 L.
