Prosperous combination set for successful renewal today

The Noble Lyric-John Dowling combination prospered with four wins on the trot last season, and it might have a successful renewal at today’s Timaru meeting

The five-year-old gelding from Ashburton and the chipper veteran jockey from Rlccarton will join forces again in the Satterthwalte and Co.. 10,000, first leg of the Timaru Racing Club’s T.A.B. double and the first of the two T.A.B. trifecta races. Dowling had not rejoined the active ranks of jockeys, after an injury, when Noble Lyric ran in the Geraldine Cup on September 28, but he, like everyone else paying any attention, must have been heartened by the gelding’s performance for third in the hands of Ron McCann. That was Noble Lyric’s third start for the season and it is reasonable to assume he will be a better horse for it . Count Claudio and Griakos, the two to beat Noble Lyric in the Geraldine Cup, are in the line-up again today. Gralkos usually leaves his stamp on his races while filling his usual role of pacemaker. Those tactics have not paid off for him so far this season, but the North Canterbury-trained grey remains on the list of fancies after his two recent seconds. Deerstalker remains one of the problem horses of the field after some rollercoaster form in two starts this season — his first for a win, the other for a wellbeaten ninth at Riccarotn last week. Grant Davison will ride Deerstalker, which might have the more difficult assignment in hopes held for a T.A.B. double for the Jan Hay stable today. In Danseuse Royale, the Hay stable will supply the favourite for the second leg, the Timaru Herald Stakes. Danseuse Royale brought her record to 12 wins from 33 starts when she easily won fresh up at the Geraldine meeting — a record that cannot be approached by any of the others.
