Dope decision put off
NZPA-Reuter Paris The governing body of motor-racing put off a decision on the. introduction of random dope-test-ing of Grand Prix drivers at its plenary meeting in Paris yesterday. The Frenchman, JeanMarie Balestre, who was re-elected president of the International Motor Sport Federation (F.1.5.A.) for four years, said that the federation’s executive committee had deferred for further study a proposal for introducing dope tests. Dope-testing of drivers, to bring motor racing in line with most other big sports, has been discussed by the International Automobile Federation (F.1.A.)
medical commission for several years. Proposals to regulate the possible use of stimulants and other substances which might affect a driver’s reflexes had been prepared for consideration by the medical commission. The commission recommended the tests, while making clear it did not believe the use of medicines illegal In other sports was .occurring in motor racing. Announcing provisional calendars for world and regional motor-sport championships in 1988, Mr Balestre made it clear there would not be two Grands Prix in Britain next year.
